Healthy individuals infected with Listeria usually experience relatively mild symptoms, “such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea,” the FDA says. But a Listeria infection can cause “serious and sometimes fatal infections” in young children, seniors, and those with weakened immune systems, the FDA notes. It can also result in miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. Luckily, no illnesses have been reported as of June 4, the FDA’s latest notice says.
