In early February, Walgreens announced in a statement that they had been selected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to administer the COVID vaccine in association with the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program. As the CDC explains, the program is a collaboration between the federal government, states, and 21 national pharmacy partners and independent pharmacy networks with the aim of making shots more accessible. Walgreens will be administering vaccines in 29 states at select locations as of Feb. 25, when the company says it will start getting a weekly allocation of more than 480,000 doses. Walgreen’s initial allotment was 180,000 doses per week. While eligibility varies from state to state, the groups currently being vaccinated include healthcare workers, people over the age of 65, and people with underlying conditions. Since there is still limited availability of vaccines, Walgreens will not administer vaccinations on a walk-in basis at this time.
